Open the official NotebookLM website and sign in with an eligible Google account. Stay on Standard rather than starting a paid Google AI subscription or trial. Create a notebook, add a source, and ask a question about it. Free access still requires sign-in, supported-region availability, and compliance with age requirements.
Standard allows 100 notebooks with 50 sources each. Google’s comparison lists 200 notebooks and 100 sources for Plus, and 500 notebooks and 300 sources for Pro. Paid plans can expand capacity and features. Usage refreshes every 5 hours up to a weekly limit. In Settings > Usage, check your remaining allowance; prompt complexity, chat length, models, and features all affect consumption.
Choose Duck.ai for general chat without creating an account. Choose a local model through Ollama if you can supply hardware and want a local workflow; it does not provide NotebookLM’s notebook interface automatically. Neither alternative is a drop-in replacement for source-grounded notebooks.
Students can use the free Standard plan when they meet Google’s account, age, and region requirements. A separate student offer or school license has its own eligibility.
Google lists Standard as a free plan, separately from paid Google AI subscriptions and promotional trials.
