Free tier
Yes, eligible AI Studio and Gemini API models have a free tier. Follow a no-card setup checklist and learn when billing and model charges apply.
Yes. New accounts start on a free tier with access to certain models in AI Studio and the Gemini API, within their free-tier rate limits. Paid-only models and higher usage require billing. Check the selected project and model before making a request.
Open Google AI Studio ↗| Feature | Free access / condition |

Sign in to Google AI Studio with an eligible Google account. Check that the selected project is on the Free tier, choose a model with a free-tier entry in the pricing table, and try a small prompt. For an application, use that project’s API key on your server. Keep billing disabled if your intention is to stay on the eligible free tier.
Upgrade when you need a paid-only model or paid-tier capacity. Google’s billing guide describes linking a billing account and prepaying at least $5, with some accounts offered Postpay during the rollout. A Google AI consumer subscription does not replace checking your API project’s billing status.
Model eligibility and live rate limits can change. Open AI Studio, check the selected project’s billing tier, and inspect its rate-limit dashboard. A free tier is limited access, not a promise that every model or generation feature is free.
Groq offers a separate hosted free plan with its own per-model limits. Ollama runs compatible models on your machine, where hardware and electricity replace hosted API costs. Compare models and required capabilities before switching; a free chat website does not automatically supply developer API access.
An API key identifies a project. Charges depend on that project’s billing tier, model, and usage. Confirm these before running an application.
Do not treat another API key as new quota. Check Google’s current account-level tier and limit rules.
No. Use the current pricing table’s Free Tier column for the exact model and feature. Some entries are not available on the free tier.
Free-tier access remains subject to limits. Paid access requires billing setup; if billing is already enabled, check the project’s current paid-tier pricing and usage.
