What is an AI prompt?

An AI prompt is the instruction, question, or material you give a generative AI tool to guide its response. “Summarize these notes in five bullets” is a prompt. It can be a simple question; a complex task may need context, examples, and a requested format. The word also has other meanings, such as “quick” or a computer’s request for input. This guide covers AI prompts.

How to write a useful prompt

  1. State one concrete task. Use an action such as compare, rewrite, extract, or explain. “Help with marketing” leaves the result undefined.
  2. Supply the relevant context. Name the audience, purpose, and source material. Separate instructions from quoted material using labels or delimiters.
  3. Describe the output. Ask for a table, a short email, or a list of actions. Add an example when a particular style or format matters.
  4. Set boundaries, then check. Say what must be preserved and what is unknown. A fluent answer can still be wrong; verify it against your task and sources.

These are practical building blocks, not a mandatory formula. A simple question may need only one sentence. A role such as “act as an editor” can set perspective, but does not supply expertise or evidence.

A vague request, made specific

Before

“Summarize this.”

After

“Summarize the notes below for a teammate who missed the meeting. Give five bullets, then an action table with owners and due dates. Use only the notes; mark missing details as not specified. Notes: [paste notes].”

The revision makes the audience, source, format, and handling of missing information explicit. It is an illustrative example, not a measured claim that every model will follow it.

Investigate a code error

Identify likely causes of the error in the supplied code and propose a minimal fix.

Include: I will provide the language/runtime version, the smallest reproducible code, expected behavior, and the exact error below.

Check the result: Run the patch and regression tests in a safe local environment; a suggested patch is not a verified fix.

When should you add an example?

Start with a direct instruction when the task is clear. If the output needs a particular pattern, add a small input/output example and keep the real task separate. Examples show a pattern to imitate; they are not evidence that an answer is correct.

Without an example (zero-shot)

“Label each supplied support message as Billing, Technical, or Other. Return message ID and label only. Messages: [paste messages].”

With an example

“Use these labels: Billing, Technical, Other. Example input: #A: I was charged twice. Example output: #A | Billing. Now label these new messages in the same format: [paste messages].”

Providing several demonstrations is commonly called few-shot prompting. Choose examples that cover the distinctions your task needs, then check the output on new cases. More examples are not automatically better. You can place your examples in the builder’s background field.

From a copied prompt to a checked result

  1. Choose a tool that supports your task: text chat for drafting or an image generator for pictures. A template does not add capabilities to that tool.
  2. Replace the example audience, dates, and constraints. Add the actual source wherever the template asks for it; remove unused placeholders.
  3. Run the prompt, then use its “Check the result” question. Verify facts against the source, run code tests, or inspect the generated image as appropriate.
  4. Describe one concrete mismatch in a follow-up, request a revision, and compare it with the previous result. Keep a useful version together with the task and tool you tested.

Improve the next response

  • Too generic? Add the intended audience, a concrete example, and a definition of a useful result.
  • Wrong format? Show a small sample of the desired structure and ask for a revision using the same source.
  • Missing or invented facts? Supply the relevant source, ask it to mark gaps, and verify the answer yourself. Asking for citations does not prove they exist.
  • Too many moving parts? Split research, drafting, and checking into separate tasks. Change one requirement at a time and compare outputs.

Common questions

Is this an AI prompt generator?

It is a free template builder: the prompt updates immediately as you edit the fields. It does not use a model to rewrite or optimize your input. Copy the result into a compatible chat or image tool to run it.

Can I use the same prompt in different AI tools?

Plain-language instructions are a useful starting point, but supported inputs, image controls, context limits, and outputs differ. Adapt the prompt to the selected tool and test it; no wording guarantees the same result across models.

Do I need a long prompt or a paid prompt library?

Start with the shortest instruction that clearly defines your task. Add detail when it resolves ambiguity. You can write your own prompt or browse community examples; running one may still require an account or paid usage on the AI provider. Explore prompts.chat →
